I showed them the piece and Penney immediately said you need a score and I know someone who would great for this. So she introduced me to Mark Mancina. Mark came in, looked at the piece and his reaction was, My daughter is going to love this. At that moment I knew he was the right choice. Some of Mancina's themes and music might remain in the final score, but at this point, it's too early to say for sure. "Trying to move out of the action movie ghetto has led to fewer assignments for Mancina, whose gentle, Thomas Newman-ish score for Return to Paradise had the misfortune of being written for a movie barely anyone saw. His desire to avoid being typecast is understandable, yet his latest big hit was yet another urban thriller: Training Day".

Solid reviews and a sharp marketing campaign will add to the turnout as well. As with many of the actor's films, business from African-American ticketbuyers will be superb and will help give it a leg up on the other major films in the marketplace which have no black stars. But the one question mark that Training Day poses lies in the lead role. Will audiences buy Denzel in a bad guy role? Moviegoers should at least give it a try this weekend and good word-of-mouth could allow the film to stay strong through the fall season. Launching in 2,712 theaters, Training Day looks to top the box office charts this weekend with about $20M" (BoxOfficeGuru).
