HOW TO GET THERE

 

 

Solavalle is located in western Cantabria (Spain), only 2 Kms.  away from Cabezón de la Sal (see centre of map), not far from the sea. The region of Cantabria, in the northern coast of Spain, borders Asturias (to the west) and País  Vasco (esast), and Castilla-León (south).Both road and rail connections to this area are excellent. If driving,  you should take road N-634,  Santander- Oviedo,   that crosses Cabezón de la Sal.

 

 

When coming from Santander, Ontoria lies a couple Kilometres before arriving into Cabezón, and the road leading into the village takes you directly to Cabezón de la Sal (see map). You may also reach Cabezón de la Sal by train from Santander (trains leaving every hour at 15 past from the Ferrocarril de Via Estrecha -FEVE-station) or from Oviedo (only two daily trains, at )

Solavalle lies near some of northern Spain´s most beautiful, unspoilt beaches, distinguished with the EU blue flag, and in a generally well-preserved area where you can enjoy the rich cultural and narural heritage of rural Cantabria. Some suggestions are towns of Comillas (don´t miss the small palace called "El Capricho" build by renowned architect Gaudí, the Jesuit University), San Vicente de la Barquera (the castle, "Castillo del Rey", the church Santa María de los Angeles and the Chapel of la Barquera), and Bárcena Mayor (for its traditional architecture and crafts).

The region of Cantabria is an ideal location for rural   tourism. It offers visitors an amiable and peaceful environment and a great variety of attractive and well preserved landscapes, permeated with a strong cultural identity and alive with ancient traditions linked to the traditional way of living . The western district,  where Solavalle is lacated, combines a green and welcoming countryside with an attractive coastline: Comillas beach is scarcely 15 minutes away and easily accessible, as the area has an excellent road network.

Cabezón de la Sal, only 2 Km. from Ontoria,   provides all kinds of services: post office, banks,  health care centre, etc. and a variety of festive, cultural, and leisure options such as indoor and open-air swimming pools, tennis courts, sauna, etc.

Don´t miss the open-air, colourful market of Cabezón de la Sal, every Saturday morning, where you can buy a variety of natural, quality products directs from local farmers and vegetable gardens, as well as flowers, clothes, music, antiques..., or just walk about and enjoy the lively atmospehere. The market is strewn along the streets around the main plaza in Cabezón de la Sal, a busy town worth strolling around, on the look-out for some well-Kept examples of the stone buildings thar characterise the beautiful architecture of the area.

Visitors are welcome to join in the many public festivities and local country fairs held in villages in the area all year round. Worth mentioning for their colour and character are autumn livestock fears, where local farmers buy and sell , and  special event held on the  12th October know as "La Pasá",  where cattle of the  local "tudanca" breed from the surrounding villages are brought into Cabezón de la Sal for a "show off" promenade along the main streets.

If you want to combine a leisure and placid vacation with some night enjoyment and fun, there is also a wide range of possibilities    in the surroundings. Besides the typical spanish "bares" and cafeterias, somo of which are open till quite late, several pubs in the vicinity of Ontoria are also alive with night  life well into the night. In the summertime you may also want to join the very popular open-air night festivals, concerts and fairs held almost daily in the area.

A tourist office in Cabezón de la Sal provides excellent  information, maps and guides about Cantabria. You may want  to visit it and request information regarding medieval Santillana del Mar  (and the famous Altamira prehistoric caves), only half an hour from Ontoria; or Picos de Europa area, not far, and worth a day excursion for mountain lovers; or nearby Saja-Nansa natural park, where you may enjoy the beautifully preserved villages and a walk into the beech forest; or Oyambre natural park , a protected area where yet unspoilt beaches blend into rolling meadows, framed in a background of snowy peaks that make it one of Spain´s most beautiful and remarkable landscapes.
